SPP06 How To Maximise Learning Potential Of EAL Students

Overview

In the multi-cultural society we live in, you’re likely to have children at your academic setting who are bilingual or multilingual and have English as an Additional Language (EAL). You need to know how this will affect their speech, language, and communication development and how best to support these children so that they leave school with the best possible outcomes.

School Impact

Focusing on a whole school and subject-based approach the course provides guidance on how to plan and prioritise provision for EAL learners. This course will explore getting the start right: language pedagogy, the induction programme for new arrivals: the importance of assessment and target-setting; integrating EAL throughout the school; an inclusive pedagogy for learners who use EAL; academic, linguistic and social inclusion and the role of the community in enhancing a multi-cultural environment. In addition, the course will look at how early years practitioners are fundamental in supporting children learning English as an Additional Language (EAL). The course will explore the stages of learning for children with EAL, approaches and strategies for young learners, common communication challenges, and how to respect and encourage home language.

This course is suitable for practitioners working with children in the Primary phase. Participants will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to integrate a language focus into all classrooms and implement a whole school approach to ensuring EAL students thrive and achieve and have full access to the curriculum.

Outcomes:
• You will know the stages of language acquisition and the expected pattern of language development;
• You will know what approaches and strategies work well with children learning EAL;
• You will be able to respond appropriately to 'code switching' and understand the importance of learning a bit about a child's home language;
• This course will help you to understand good EAL practice in the Early Years Foundation Stage and the role of speaking and listening;
• Activities to encourage you to reflect on your learning both practical information and links to websites to expand knowledge.
