CLT03 Memory, Sticky Learning, Cognitive Load, and Dual Coding - What Curriculum Leaders and Senior Leaders Need to Know

Overview

This course is designed for senior leaders and curriculum leaders to develop their learning culture, climate, and ethos to an outstanding level.

School Impact

During the session, you will understand how children build and consolidate their learning and how to design your curriculum intent, implementation, and impact with memory, sticky learning, cognitive load, and dual coding in mind. You will also consider how to ensure that your Staff CPD is as impactful as possible, using the best principles of cognitive science to further develop the quality of education in your school. As part of the course, you will be introduced to many practical strategies as well as case studies from outstanding schools. During the session, you will be coached by an ECM adviser to audit your current practice and to identify key next steps to support you in moving forward, using ECM materials. This course is extremely useful as a stand-alone course; it also perfectly complements our other course on memory, which is for teachers and subject leaders.

By the end of this course, you will:

• Understand Cognitive Science in relation to learning, including key terms and concepts.

• Consider how to develop an outstanding ethos, climate, and culture to maximise learning.

• Understand the Learning and Memory Process and its implications both as a senior leader and curriculum leader.

• Learn how to effectively engage, build, and consolidate knowledge and memory transfer across the curriculum and within and across curriculum areas.

• Develop an understanding of how to produce effective presentations for staff, parents, pupils, and the wider community utilising cognitive load theory.

• Use cognitive science to enhance staff development and CPD and ensure maximum impact on pupil outcomes.

• Utilise a ‘step-by-step’ approach to effectively implement memory and learning and to develop an impactful learning culture across the school, ensuring maximum success.

• Undertake a self-evaluation of your current practice as a senior leader and curriculum leader in terms of identifying clear next steps and develop a succinct work plan to support you in moving forward with memory, long-term transfer, and cognitive load.
